The Basic Chemicals business unit (BAC)
The Basic Chemicals business unit is part of specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG and one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality industrial chemicals.

One of the main focuses of the business unit is aromatic compounds – including the associated chlorination and in some cases also nitration of toluene or benzene. Chlorobenzenes, chlorotoluenes, nitrotoluenes and their derivatives such as nitrochlorobenzenes, cresols, toluidines and monoisocyanates are produced at the German sites. Production is organized in a so-called "aromatics network", an integrated cluster of interconnected production plants. In its basic structure, this network has existed for more than 100 years and is regarded as the largest of its kind in the world. LANXESS's specialized know-how lies above all in maintaining an isomer balance of these aromatic hydrocarbons in accordance with market needs, a skill mastered by very few manufacturers.

In addition, the Basic Chemicals business unit is a leading producer of amines, aminoalcohols and benzyl products as well as oxidation products such as phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride. Hydrazine hydrate and polyols such as trimethylolpropane and hexanediol are also in the business unit's portfolio. In addition, the unit produces and markets inorganic basic chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium bisulfite, thionyl chloride and sulfuryl chloride as well as calcium sulfate and calcium formate.

The customers of the Basic Chemicals business unit are from virtually all industrial segments. With its comprehensive product portfolio and many years of production experience, the business unit is regarded around the world as a dependable partner, especially with regard to quality and reliability. LANXESS's basic chemicals are used above all in the production of agricultural active ingredients, polymers, surface coatings and pigments. The construction industry uses calcium sulfate as a high-grade binder for screeds (anhydrite binders).

The BAC business unit is part of LANXESS’s Advanced Intermediates segment, which posted sales of EUR 1,310 million in fiscal 2008. It is headed by Dr. Hans-Georg Schmitt.

Key brands
Baynox® / Baynox® Plus are widely used throughout the world as biodiesel stabilizers. The products prolong the storage stability of this fuel, which is made of renewable raw materials, by preventing premature oxidation of unsaturated fatty acid esters contained in the biodiesel.
Bayowet®: This product line covers fluorosurfactants, which are used, for example, as spray mist inhibitors in pickling and galvanizing baths (Bayowet® FT 248) and as heat-resistant flame retardants for polymers (Bayowet® C4).
Diphyl®: Organic heat transfer fluids, characterized by high thermal stability. They can be used across a broad spectrum of temperatures.
Vulkanox®: The members of this product family (Vulkanox® BHT, Vulkanox® BKF) are antioxidants. They protect organic compounds such as mineral oils, adhesives, paints, aliphatic and cyclic ethers, vegetable oils, plastics, elastomers and latices from oxidation.
Calcium sulfate binder CAB 30 is a screed binder much used in the construction industry due to its considerable technical advantages over cement – for example in the seamless laying of large areas of screed.
Production sites
Brunsbüttel, Dormagen, Krefeld, Leverkusen (all Germany), Baytown (United States), Weifang (China)
