 • Maurya Sheraton sets example, begins recycling waste water
Every evening, an NDMC water tanker rolls into the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in Delhi’s swish diplomatic area. But, not to provide water. Here, the NDMC is the receiver.

Following the guidelines of the environmental ISO 14000 certificates, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has written to about 70 existing and upcoming large hotels to ensure 100 per cent waste water recycling and zero water discharge if they want the certification. While, most hotels are still mulling over the suggested changes, Maurya Sheraton is one of the first to begin recycling all its waste water.

Now, not only the hotel, but also the civic body is reaping the benefits of the recently-set up sewage treatment plant at Maurya Sheraton. The hotel uses 1,20,000 litre of re-cycled water each day and on the suggestion of Environment Secretary J K Dadoo, who wrote to NDMC chief Parimal Rai, gives away 50,000 litre water everyday.

“We got a sewage treatment plant, a Membrane bio-reactor, in March. This recycles sewage water. We use 1, 20,000 litre each day for horticulture and cooling towers and are left with around 50,000 litre. Since June 5, NDMC has been taking four to five tankers of water from us, which we give free-of-charge,” said Maurya Sheraton Chief Engineer N Ramamoorthy.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has also written to 33 proposed hotels for the 2010 Games, to comply with environmental standards. These include zero waste water discharge, zero garbage, installation of solar water heating systems, rain water harvesting structures and use of only CFL and LEDs lights.
