Dubai on Track to Treble Water Desalination Capacity
DUBAI - Dubai is on track to more than treble its desalinated water capacity in the next eight to 10 years with an investment of up to $20 billion in five power and water projects that are being planned or under construction, an executive knowledgeable about the projects said on Monday.

Dubai’s fresh water output capacity will go up by 600 million imperial gallons, or MIG, per day from the current 278 MIG per day when the five new plants, each with a capacity of 120 MIG per day will go on stream, said Leon Awerbuch, a board member of the lnternational Desalination Association, or IDA. Dubai has at present six desalination plants in operation.

The new power and desalination plants would also more than double electricity production in Dubai, raising it by an additional 7,500 MW in generating capacity, said Awerbuch, speaking on the sidelines of a news briefing to announce the IDA Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse 2009.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, or DEWA, currently has a capacity of 6,676 MW of electricity. By the end of the year, when Jebel Ali Station phase 2 would be commissioned, the total power-generating capacity of Dubai will reach 7,287 MW.

In March, Dewa said it would invest Dh57 billion in new projects that are underway as part of a Dh72 billion programme to boost water and power production. Of the total investment, Dh15.5 billion was allocated to projects that have come into service over the past two years.

The UAE has invested a total of $50 billion in power and desalination during the past 10 years, Awerbuch said.

Major power and desalination projects are also under way in Abu Dhabi and Northern Emirates. Abu Dhabi will invest $20 billion over the next 10 years and plans to double its water production capacity from 630 MIG to 1200 MIG per day.

In March, the Federal Electricity and Water Authority announced three desalination plants — one in Ras Al Khaimah and two in Ajman — with a total daily output of 30 MIG. The plants are set for completion by the beginning of 2011.

Dubai’s annual demand for water rose by 10 per cent in 2008, to 88,405 MIG, according to the latest statistics released by the DEWA.

Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA, recently said the state-owned utility provider was deferring the tendering of its $8.6 billion Hassyan power and desalination plant until September. The first phase of the Hassyan project would cost an estimated $6 billion and would have a 1,500 megawatt capacity.

DEWA also plans to go ahead with a hydrogen power plant project with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts following the completion of a feasibility study.
